Christian Deutsch (1814-1886) & Katherine Dahlem (1824-1901)

Christian Deutsch & Katherine Dahlem are my 3X great grandparents. They are the parents of my 2X great grandmother Caroline “Carrie” Deutsch.

Christian Deutsch was born January 27, 1814 in Bavaria, a state in Southeastern Germany. His parents are thought to be Christian Deutsch & Maria Diener.

Katherine Dahlem was born March 21, 1824 in Germany. Her parents are thought to be Joseph Dahlem & Catherine Finger.

Christian and Katherine married in Germany, probably around 1845.

Christian and Katherine arrived in the US on May 31, 1854. The family appears on a passenger list for the ship Francis. Christian was a 40 year old farmer, Katherine was 30, and they had three children: Elizabeth, age 8; Catherine, age 4; and Barbara, an infant. They left from LeHavre, France and arrived in New York, New York. The ship held 298 passengers.

A U.S. Naturalization record indicates that Christian Deutsch, originally of Bavaria was naturalized in Iowa on November 3, 1860.

On the 1870 US Census, the family lived in Denmark, Lee County, Iowa. Christian was 56 and a “janitor in academy.” The academy was probably Denmark Academy, a school established in 1843. Katherine was 46. Only their youngest children, born in the US, lived in the home: Mary, 13; John, 10; Charles, 7; Carrie, 4.

On the 1885 Iowa Census, Christian was 71 and Katherine was 61. Children at home were Mary, age 26; Charles, age 21; and Carrie, age 18.

Christian died February 15, 1886. He was 72 years old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

In the 1898 St. Joseph City Directory, Katherine was listed as the widow of Christian, living at 2108 S. 12th with son John. Son Charles was also listed in the directory, without a home address.

On the 1900 US Census, Katherine lived in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri with daughter Mary and her family, and with her sons John and Henry. (This is the only reference I have to a son named Henry.) Katherine reported having had 7 children with 4 still living – but at least 6 were living in 1900, and if Henry was her son they had 8 children.

Katherine died February 14, 1901. She was 76 years old. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
