George Richardson (1821-1879) and Johanna May (1821-?)

George Wesley Richardson & Johanna May are my 3x great grandparents, the parents of my 2x great grandfather Marcus McDonald Richardson.

George Wesley Richardson was born January 31, 1821 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Potential fathers for George are John or Joseph Richardson, both heads of households in Randolph, North Carolina on the 1830 US Census.

Johanna May was born about 1821 in North Carolina. A potential father for Johanna is David May, head of a household in Guilford, North Carolina on the 1830 US Census.

George and Johanna married October 11, 1838 in Davie County, North Carolina.

On the 1850 US Census, the family lived in Washington, Gibson County, Indiana. George was 30 and Johanna was 29. The had 6 children: David, age 10; Rachel, age 8; William, age 5; Emily, age 3; Abison, age 1; George, an infant.

On the 1860 US Census, the family lived in Columbia, Gibson County, Indiana. George was 40 and Johanna was 39. There were 9 children at home: David, age 21; William, age 16; Emily, age 13; George, age 11; Marcus, age 9; Nancy, age 7; Mary, age 5; John, age 4; Thomas, age 2.

George served in the Civil War for the Union, as a Private in Company A, 58th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry.

In 1865, George was listed on an IRS Tax Assessment List. He lived in Columbus and his occupation was Sawyer, someone who runs a saw mill. He paid $6.67.

On the 1870 US Census the family remained in Columbia, Gibson County, Indiana. George was 49 and Johanna was 48. There were 6 children at home: George, age 20; Marcus, age 18; Isabel, age 16; Mary, age 14; John, age 12; Thomas, age 11.

George died on November 23, 1879 in Gibson County, Indiana. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

On the 1880 US Census, Johanna was 59 and widowed. She still lived in Columbia, Gibson County, Indiana. Sons John, age 23, and Thomas, age 22, lived in the home. Next door was son Wesley and his wife.

On the 1890 Veterans Schedule for Jackson, Dallas County, Missouri, Johanna is listed as widow of George W. Richardson. It is unknown when she died.

Children of George Wesley Richardson & Johanna May:

David Lawrence Richardson – David was born about 1839 in North Carolina. He married Missouri A. Dill on July 4, 1859 in Indiana. He served in the Civil War with Company F of Indiana 33rd Infantry Regiment. David and Missouri had a daughter, and Missouri died shortly after. David married Margaret Ellen OHaver on November 30, 1863. On the 1870 US Census, the daughter was living with her maternal grandparents in Columbia, Gibson County, Indiana. I can’t find David and Margaret in 1870. David died between 1879 when their youngest child was born & the 1880 US Census. In 1880 Margaret was a widow with 6 children in Washington, Gibson County, Indiana. She would soon marry David’s brother John.

Rachel Richardson – Rachel was born about 1842 in Tennessee according to the 1850 US Census, the only record I have of her.

William Wesley Richardson – William was born May 2, 1844 in Indiana. He married Jane Lance on September 27, 1866 in Pike County, Indiana. They had 1 child. He was a farmer, and then an insurance agent. He died October 6, 1903 in Oakland City, Gibson County, Indiana.

Emily Richardson – Emily was born 1847 in Indiana. She married Isaac Shewmaker on March 6, 1865 in Indiana. They had 11 children. She died December 9, 1913. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.

Abison Richardson – Abison was born 1849 in Indiana, according to the 1850 US Census, which is the only record I have of him.

George Washington Richardson – George was born January 25, 1851 in Indiana. He married Sarah Greene on February 1, 1872 in Dubois County, Indiana. They had 2 children. He married Mary Rice on August 29, 1885 in Phelps County, Missouri. They had 5 children. He died August 27, 1922 in Madison County, Illinois. He was 71.

Marcus McDonald Richardson – My 2x great grandfather Marcus was born August 12, 1851 in Pike County, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Ann Greene on March 11, 1875 in Pike County, Indiana. They had 4 children. Marcus died October 27, 1941 in Reeds Spring, Stone County, Missouri. He was 90. You can see his Find A Grave memorial here. Read more about him here.

Nancy A. Isabell Richardson – Nancy was born about 1853 in Indiana. My only records of her are the 1860 & 1870 US Census.

Mary A. Richardson – Mary was born about 1856 in Indiana. My only records of her are the 1860 & 1870 US Census.

John C. Richardson – John was born about 1856 in Indiana. On March 1, 1884, he married Margaret Ellen OHaver Richardson in Phelps County, Missouri. Margaret had been married to his brother David and had 6 children. She and John had a daughter. Margaret died in 1918 in Ridgely, Lake County, Tennessee, and her death certificate indicates that she was married, but I do not know when John died. Margaret’s Find A Grave memorial is here.

Thomas P. Richardson – Thomas was born May 6, 1858. He married Catherine J. Williams on August 5, 1880 in Gibson County, Indiana. They had 8 children. He died on August 2, 1921. He was 63. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Union F. Richardson – Union was born April 23, 1861 and died June 1, 1861. He was 1 month and 8 days old. His Find A Grave memorial is here.

Christina M. Richardson – Christina was born May 9, 1863 and she died 9 days later. Her Find A Grave memorial is here.
