Silas Blakesley (1813-after 1876) and Sally Edwards (1815-about 1850)

Silas Blakesley and Sally Edwards are Todd’s 4X Great Grandparents.

Silas Blakesley was born about 1813 in Franklin, Ohio. He is the son of Obediah Blakesley II and Adah Hart.

Sally Edwards was born about 1815 in Indiana. Her parents are unknown.

Silas and Sally married on February 16, 1837 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

On the 1840 US Census, Silas was head of a household in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana. There were 4 in the household: 1 male aged 20-29; 2 females under age 5; 1 female aged 20-29.

Sally died prior to November 5, 1850 when the family was enumerated on the census, but after Mary’s birth in 1847.

On the 1850 US Census, Silas was widowed and 35 years old. Children in the home were: Malinda, age 13; Sarah, age 11; Albert, age 7; John, age 5; Mary, age 3. Silas was farming in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Silas married Mary Pearman Denton on December 11, 1853 in Edgar County, Illinois. Mary had 7 children from her first marriage.

On the 1860 US Census, the family was in Prairie, Edgar County, Illinois. Silas was 47 and Mary was 41. Children in the home were: William, age ; and Mary’s children Jonas Denton, age 21; John Denton, age 18; Samuel Denton, age 16; Thomas Denton, age 14; Sarah Denton, age 12; Elizabeth Denton, age 11; Mary Denton, age 9. Silas’ children with Sally Edwards were scattered. Oldest daughter Malinda had married, and her brother John lived with her. Daughter Sarah, Todd’s 3X Great Grandmother, was married too. Son Albert was living nearby with Silas’ brother Seth. I suspect daughter Mary had died.

Mary died in 1869.

On the 1870 US Census, Silas was 56 and had been widowed a second time. He lived with son William, age 11, in Helt, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Silas married Martha Ellen Bacon on March 22, 1873 in Vermillion County, Indiana. Silas was 60 and Martha was 24. Martha had a daughter in 1869 (and hadn’t been married.) In 1870 she appears on the census with her daughter, living next door to Silas and working as the family’s servant. I don’t find record of her daughter after that.

Silas and Martha had a son, Louis Blakesley, in 1872. They had a daughter, Olive Blakesley, in 1876.

Silas is assumed to have died in about 1878. Martha remarried in 1880 to Daniel Humerickhouse.
